Although the solution of problems such as toothache, bad breath and tooth loss comes to mind when it comes to oral care, smile aesthetics due to teeth and gums have a very important place today. Aesthetic problems that occur as a result of decayed teeth, gum diseases, irregularities in tooth alignment, abnormal discoloration and tooth loss can negatively affect the social life of people. In addition to this, smile disorder, which causes self-confidence deficiencies, can even lead people to be ashamed of laughing in public.
Although the person sometimes has healthy teeth, s/he may want to improve the disproportion of teeth and gums, shape or deformities aesthetically. A beautiful smile will give the person psychological strength and at the same time give a better impression to the people in front of her/his.
With the advancement of technology and scientific studies, more beautiful smiles can be provided with many methods and the concept of "aesthetic dentistry" is more common in our lives.
One of the first concepts that come to mind when talking about aesthetic dentistry is "smile design". Smile design; it is the process of making the teeth and gums, whose aesthetic appearance is deteriorated due to various reasons, have a natural and beautiful appearance as much as possible, taking into account the facial shapes and needs of the patients. Smile design, which is a multidisciplinary approach, is carried out by applying many processes together.
Changes in smile aesthetics directly affect the social life of the person. It is also closely related to the comfort and self-confidence of the person. Since the aesthetic needs of each patient will be different, the processes to be performed are determined individually. While determining these processes, the patient's; factors such as facial features, gender, age and expectations are taken into account.
First of all, existing decayed teeth and gum diseases are treated and dental cleaning processes are applied. Afterwards, processes are determined according to the needs of the patients. These processes are generally; gum aesthetic interventions called gingivectomy, tooth whitening (bleaching) methods, compensating for tooth deficiencies with implant and prosthesis applications, porcelain laminates and veneers, zirconium veneers and orthodontic treatments (wire treatment).
In smile design, it is very important to first understand the aesthetic expectations of the patient and determine the needs correctly. Problems are determined and plans are made on the models prepared with the measurements taken from the patient's mouth. Then, measurements are made using special programs in the computer environment with the intraoral and facial photographs of the patients and the conformity to the face shape is calculated. The most approximate images that will occur after the treatment are presented to the patient with programs and temporary restorations prepared in accordance with the original in the patient's mouth and their ideas are taken.
After the planning is completed, if there is no need for orthodontic treatment, the level disorders in the gums are regulated first. In cases of missing teeth, planned implant processes and other necessary surgical applications are performed. After the healing periods of surgical applications are completed, teeth whitening procedures are applied if needed. After this stage, the visual and deformities in the teeth are sometimes eliminated by aesthetic composite fillings. In cases where this method is not sufficient, porcelain laminate and veneers and zirconium veneers come into play. For porcelain laminated applications, usually the teeth are either not etched at all or minimal abrasions are performed. If porcelain or zirconium applications are deemed appropriate, some changes can be made by taking the patient's ideas again in the rehearsals made during the stages. During all these gingival and dental applications and rehearsals, lip shape and contour are also taken into consideration and the targeted design is finalized.
Medical aesthetic processes are also used in smile design to achieve a beautiful smile. Dermal filling on lips and face areas, etc. smile can be brought to the fore with applications.
Smile is one of the most important indicators that reflect the mood of the person and affect the mood. One of the most important factors when designing a smile is age feature. This design is an application that aims to obtain a beautiful smile with lips, teeth, aesthetically pleasing to the person. It is applied more practically with changing technology and digital systems.
Patient satisfaction can be seen as the first step. Before starting the treatment, the patient is interviewed and the reason s/he is uncomfortable is heard while laughing. The plan is made accordingly, and the smile design treatment begins. While making the smile design process, attention is paid to the lip structure, the length of the teeth, the gum characteristics and the harmony of the lips and teeth.
Smile aesthetics costs vary according to the treatment technique. Treatment methods vary according to the person's mouth structure, the problems that need to be corrected, and the ideal smile that is most suitable for the person. Which treatment technique will be applied is an important point that affects the cost of the treatment. Sometimes even whitening the patient's teeth may be sufficient for smile design. However, sometimes a treatment that requires more processes may be needed. This, of course, affects the costs. Smile design and dental aesthetics is a period that includes different treatments and consists of certain stages.
There may be different congenital problems in teeth. For this, various smile design applications are considered for tooth design. When it is desired to change the tooth structure, there is no need to do any procedure on all teeth. It is possible to correct the smile with a simple process called laminate. This technique can be summarized as creating a change in the entire mouth structure by processing a few teeth.
Smile design costs may vary from clinic to clinic, depending on the technological facilities in the clinics, the materials used and the treatment method of the patient.
