What is Rhinoplasty?

People who've had rhinoplasty surgery are everywhere around us, from celebrities and colleagues to family and even friends. Rhinoplasty, also known as a "nose job," is a surgery that patients could undergo for several intentions.

Reshaping the nose (or the nasal area) may be appropriate after a traumatic incident, surgical removal of a lesion, or simply for the purpose of improving one's looks. If there are any nasal issues with breathing (inhalation), this surgery will improve breathing functions too, not only that but also improve facial balance and harmony by improving the nose's proportion to the rest of the face, or adjusting the shape of the nose itself to a more suitable shape. (1)

The upper part of the nose is made of bone, while the lower part is made of cartilage. Rhinoplasty surgery may alter the bone, cartilage, and skin of the nose, or all three at once. Consult your surgeon to see if rhinoplasty is right for you and what results in you can expect from the surgery. (2)

Do you want to learn more information about rhinoplasty results? Check our article about; "Are Rhinoplasty Results Permanent?".

Your surgeon will consider your other facial features, the skin on your nose (thin or thick, etc.), and what you want to alter while preparing a rhinoplasty surgery. If you're a suitable candidate for surgery, the doctor will create a unique treatment plan for you.

Even though rhinoplasty is a common and standard plastic surgery operation; each patient and each nose is different, so a customized and special plan must be made for each patient and each nose separately.

What Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) Can (and Can't) Do

You must have a clear and reasonable understanding of your motivation and goals for the surgery, just as you do with all types of cosmetic plastic surgery, and you must discuss them thoroughly with your surgeon. Improving your appearance won't solve all of your problems in life (or psychological problems for that matter), but it will help you deal with them more confidently and easily. (3)

Rhinoplasty surgery can:

  • Increase or reduce the size of the nose,
  • Change the shape of the tip of the nose, the bridge of the nose, and the nostrils,
  • Change the angle between the nose and the upper lip,
  • Straighten the septum,
  • Narrow the nostrils.

Important Notes: Things You Must Know About Rhinoplasty

There are a few things and important details you must pay attention to before undergoing rhinoplasty surgery, they are as follows;

  • Rhinoplasty (or nose reshaping, or nose job) surgery is one of the most complexes of all cosmetic surgeries, despite its popularity and widespread application. Weak surgical technique may result in long-term deformity, so choose your surgeon wisely.

  • There is no such thing as an ideal rhinoplasty outcome, but an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon can more often than not come near to perfection. A successful cosmetic result is nearly impossible to achieve without experience, creative talent, and technical expertise.

  • Contemporary rhinoplasty surgery can greatly improve the appearance of a misshaped or injured nose, but the basic architecture can only be altered so much. Therefore, hold your rhinoplasty hopes in order.

  • Even if you want a certain look for your nose, a nose that looks amazing on someone else could look odd on you or simply; not good. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution in terms of rhinoplasty, each facial feature is different. Since aesthetic understanding is different from person to person; there is no single rhinoplasty standard.

  • Patients that have had effective rhinoplasty have one thing in common: a natural look. The most appealing nose is one that blends in with the rest of your face. It should not stand out, but rather blend in with other parts.

  • Excellent surgical abilities alone do not guarantee a positive rhinoplasty result. An effective rhinoplasty result often needs strong tissue and favorable healing responses. Even the most professional surgeons' work can be ruined by bad genes, particularly when combined with poor cartilage and bad skin. Not only that but also not following the surgeon's instructions after surgery may result in an undesirable outcome.

  • If all other factors are equivalent; another thing to bear in mind is that a young person with healthy skin, strong nasal cartilage, tolerant skin, and good overall health and diet would have the best prognosis for an effective rhinoplasty.

  • The key to long-term function and beauty is a strong and well-proportioned nasal skeleton. When large amounts of tip cartilage are removed to reshape the nose, the skeletal support is weakened, resulting in unsightly malformation. Instead of removing the tip cartilage; it should be reshaped, repositioned, or reinforced to preserve or improve skeletal support. Your surgeon, rather a skilled surgeon, should be aware of all these facts and must apply these best surgical techniques.

  • Surgical inflammation can distort the nose for several months following surgery in most cases. Results can be deceiving at first, particularly if you have thick sebaceous skin or a lot of acne, but in time it will get better and the real results will come out. Keep your rhinoplasty results in mind and be patient.

  • If you are obsessed with having the perfect nose, you may experience heartbreak and disappointment as a result of your obsession. Near-perfection in rhinoplasty is difficult to achieve, so think twice before losing an almost-perfect nose with revision surgery; you can end up spending a lot just to get your old nose back, that is if you want a revision-surgery of course. (4)

Today's modern rhinoplasty is more predictable, precise, and efficient than it has ever been. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can create a naturally beautiful nose that flatters the face and lasts a lifetime with the right combination of surgical ability and favorable skin.

How is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is a surgery in which the surgeon reshapes the cartilage and bone of your nose by making an incision either outside or within the nostrils. To surgically reshape your nose, your surgeon will most likely remove cartilage from the inside of your nose and replace it with cartilage from the other parts of your nose, or in some rare cases, your ear or rib. Rhinoplasty may be done in a surgeon's office, a hospital, or an outpatient surgical center. (5)

Types of Rhinoplasty

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) is a highly individualized surgery. Therefore, depending on a patient's anatomy and desired changes, the specific techniques a cosmetic surgeon will use throughout surgery will look a little different every time. A cosmetic surgeon's techniques can, in general, break into one of the following procedural approaches:

Open Rhinoplasty Surgery

A small incision is made under the nasal tip, between the nostrils, for "open" rhinoplasty surgery. This method gives the cosmetic surgeon more access to the nasal structures, allowing the surgeon to mould the nose into the desired form. Cosmetic surgeons will normally use the open rhinoplasty method for patients who need more comprehensive reshaping due to improved accessibility. The scars that occur are well-hidden in the natural contours of the nose, making them as unnoticeable as possible. (6) Do you want to learn more about scars? Check out our article about; "Does Rhinoplasty Surgery Leave Scars?".

Closed Rhinoplasty Surgery (also known as: "minimally invasive surgery")

Incisions are made within the nostril for "closed" rhinoplasty surgery. This method is most widely used by patients who need only slight changes to their nasal structures in order to obtain their desired results. Closed rhinoplasty has the benefit of no noticeable scarring after surgery; however, it may not be sufficient for more intensive rhinoplasty surgeries. (7)

Your surgeon may combine a closed rhinoplasty with an open rhinoplasty in some cases. Additionally, after starting a closed rhinoplasty surgery, your surgeon can determine that you need an open rhinoplasty surgery to safely and effectively complete your surgery. (8

Rhinoplasty is commonly performed as an outpatient surgery. Based on some factors, your surgeon will decide which form of rhinoplasty is better for you and whether you will need to remain in the hospital. Your diagnosis, age, medical background, overall health, and probably your personal preference are all variables to consider. Learn about the different types of rhinoplasty surgery and why your doctor would be using one over the other for your treatment.

Another Option: What is a non-surgical Rhinoplasty?

You've probably heard of non-surgical rhinoplasty, also known as "liquid nose job" or "15-minute nose job." Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a dermal filling treatment that temporarily alters the shape of your nose for up to six months.

This treatment is ideal for people who want to smooth out bumps in their nose or make it look less angular but aren't ready for a long-term solution or are concerned about the risks and recovery time associated with conventional rhinoplasty surgery. (9)

What are the differences between closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty?

The majority of experts believe that both closed and open techniques will yield excellent results. The closed technique has the advantage of leaving no external scar and requiring less cartilage transplantation during surgery. The open technique has the advantage of allowing greater visibility of the nose's structures.

The majority of experts believe that the technique used, whether closed or open, is insignificant. With both techniques, experienced surgeons will produce excellent results. Your surgeon should clarify why he or she is using a specific technique during your surgery.

Types of anesthesia that may be used during your Rhinoplasty Surgery

Your surgeon will execute rhinoplasty surgery under either local or general anesthesia, with the assistance of an anesthesiologist:

General Anesthesia: A mixture of intravenous (IV) drugs and gases is used to take you into a deep sleep state. You will be unaware of the surgery and will experience no discomfort at all.

Local Anesthesia: A nerve block is another name for local anesthesia. An anesthetic will be administered into the skin and tissues around the nose by the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist. Also, to keep you calm and comfortable, you may be given a sedative through your IV. You can fall asleep during the surgery and have no memory of it. Although, with local anesthesia, you might feel some pressure around your nasal area during your surgery. Do you want to learn more about rhinoplasty surgery with local anesthesia? Check out our article about; "Can You Have Rhinoplasty Surgery Under Local Anesthesia?".

Why is Rhinoplasty Performed?

People undergo rhinoplasty surgery to repair their nose after an injury, or correct respiratory issues or a birth defect, or simply just because they don't like the way their nose looks.

Most individuals are entirely self-conscious about the shape of their nose and opt for rhinoplasty surgery to enhance their appearance (that is, of course, to improve the appearance of their nose). If that's the case, the surgery's goal will be to make your nose look more natural and make you feel less self-conscious about it.

As a result, it's critical that you understand what you don't like about your nose and therefore can express this to your surgeon clearly. The doctor will then be able to determine what is and is not surgically possible. The bridge or tip are the most common areas of concern for people who dislike their noses.

Other patients may opt for rhinoplasty as a result of a nose injury, such as a broken or bent nose as a result of an accident. Others might want a rhinoplasty if they have breathing problems related to their nasal airways. Rhinoplasty would be deemed reconstructive in both of these cases, whereas the majority of nose surgeries are classified as aesthetic.

When to Consider a Rhinoplasty Surgery (Nose Surgery or a Nose Job)

  • If you're dissatisfied with your nose's shape, size, or angle,
  • If your nose is too big, too small, or out of proportion to the rest of your face,
  • If you're having trouble breathing because of nasal irregularities,
  • If you have a nasal hump or a nasal tip that is drooping, too elevated, or wide.

Considerations: Pro's and Con's

There are both some pros and cons to this surgery. Which are as follows;

Pro’s

  • Your nose's shape, angle, and size will be optimized.
  • It is possible to correct structural issues that limit breathing and cause congestion. (10)
  • Rhinoplasty can significantly improve your self-esteem and confidence.

Con’s

  • You may grow scars at the base of your nose depending on the type of surgery you had.
  • Skin problems or skin tissue breakdown may occur as a result of the use of grafting materials.
  • It will take some time for you to adjust to your new appearance.

These are some of the most important advantages and disadvantages to consider while contemplating rhinoplasty surgery.

Are you a good candidate for Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Almost everyone is a candidate for a nose job, so you should speak with your doctor about your particular restrictions. Rhinoplasty is usually not performed on teenagers because the skeletal structure of the nose needs to be fully formed. Girls may be able to have rhinoplasty as early as 15 years old because they mature faster than boys. Teenage boys are usually not eligible for rhinoplasty until they are 17 years old or older. (11, 12, 13, 14) Rhinoplasty may be a good cosmetic choice for people who have a nose that:

  • If it is crooked or asymmetrical in some way,
  • When compared to other facial features, if it is too big or too small,
  • If the bridge of the nose has a bump on it,
  • If it is too large, wide, small, tiny, etc.
  • If it has a droopy or expanded tip,
  • If it has nostrils that are either too large or too small,
  • If the ability to breathe is obstructed,

You are most likely a good candidate for this surgery if you are in excellent overall health, have a good mindset, and have reasonable expectations.

What is the most appropriate age for rhinoplasty surgery?

According to studies, rhinoplasty should be performed at the age of a minimum of 17 years, because the bone structures of the face are nearly complete at this age and the shape of the bone skeleton of the face does not change much after this age. (15)

Elderly patients may benefit from rhinoplasty surgery too: The effects of ageing on the nose are the same as they are on the rest of the human face and body. Drooping noses, flattened or confused nose tips and bumps in the nose bridge are examples of this situation. This type of rhinoplasty aims to correct the effects of ageing on the nose. (16)

Potential Risks and Complications of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Every surgery entails some level of risk. The following are some of the potential rhinoplasty complications:

  • Heavy bleeding from the surgical site. (17)
  • Infection that may need antibiotic treatment or, in some cases, additional surgery.
  • Sutures, dressings, or antiseptic solutions may cause an allergic reaction.
  • A large blood clot (hematoma) may form beneath an incision site and may need to be drained.
  • Keloids and hypertrophic scars, scars that are raised and thickened.  These may form over the incisions that have healed. These are itchy, irritating, and unsightly, but they do not pose a health risk.
  • Slow healing, which is frequently linked to smoking or diabetes.
  • Separation of wound edges.
  • Nausea caused by the general anesthetic for a short period of time.
  • Pain that may be severe and ongoing.
  • After the bruising and swelling have subsided, the nose may feel numb or have altered senses.
  • Temporarily, the upper front teeth may feel numb.
  • The appearance of the nose may be unsatisfactory, necessitating revision surgery.
  • The sense of smell may be affected, and in some cases, lost or distorted.
  • The skin beneath the eyes may darken for up to six months.
  • The nose's underlying support structure may be weak, causing it to flatten.
  • The airways may narrow, making breathing through the nose difficult.
  • An implant may poke out into the nose or through the skin if it is inserted.
  • Septal perforation (hole in the septum).
  • Chronic nosebleeds may occur.
  • In some rare cases, even death. (18)

Who can perform rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty is normally performed by the following specialists:

  • Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons: Facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons are professionals at repairing facial defects that affect a person's appearance or functional skills, such as breathing through the nose.

  • Head and Neck Plastic Surgeons: Plastic surgeons specializes in the correction of physical defects in the head and neck that can affect a person's appearance and ability to function are known as head and neck plastic surgeons.

  • Plastic surgeons: Plastic surgeons are experts at repairing a wide range of physical flaws that impair a person's appearance or ability to function.

Preparations Before Rhinoplasty Surgery

Medication must be avoided for two weeks before surgery. These medications may make you bleed more. Only medications that the professional surgeon has approved or prescribed should be used. Supplements, herbal medicines, and natural remedies should also be avoided during the process. It is essential to quit smoking or take a break from it because smoking slows the healing process and increases the risk of infection after surgery. (19)

Immediately following Rhinoplasty Surgery

You should anticipate the following after surgery:

  • Mild to moderate discomfort,
  • Bruising and swelling, especially around the eyes. The swelling should subside in a few days, and the bruising should fade within a week or two,
  • The feeling of having a stuffy or blocked nose,
  • Numbness,

Following the initial few hours post-surgery:

  • You will be able to get out of bed and move around.
  • You should be able to eat and drink whatever you want, but it's possible that you'll have to wait for four or five hours.
  • If you need pain relief medication, ask your surgeon or the nursing staff.

What is the recovery timeline after Rhinoplasty Surgery?

The estimated recovery period for rhinoplasty is one year. That may seem like a long time, but when broken down into a timeline, it becomes much more manageable. The following recovery milestones can differ from one patient to the next, but they usually go like this:

  • Week One: Unless there is swelling around the eyes, the splint can be removed from the nose and you can go out in public without showing any signs of surgery. This could take up to two weeks to resolve. It is safe to continue normal daily activities.

  • Week two: The rest of the facial swelling should have gone down, and the bruising should be almost gone. You can comfortably resume aerobic activities such as jogging, swimming, and cycling after three to four weeks.

  • Week six: The bones are healthy, so you can resume strength training (weight lifting), glasses, and nose blowing. The numbness and abnormal sensations in your nose and nasal skin should go away in three to six months.

  • One year: The healing process should be complete, with all swelling gone and the nose's new form completely perfected.

Factors that influence the recovery period after Rhinoplasty Surgery

  • Having thicker skin of the nose can certainly prolong swelling.
  • Secondary operations would almost definitely double the time it takes to recover.
  • Steroid injections can help with recovery, but they can only be used in specific situations where there is a lag, as there are several risks involved. (20)

Is there some way to make this timeline go faster?

You can do several things to help your plastic surgery recovery go more smoothly. The following are some helpful hints:

  • Pay attention to your doctor's advice,
  • Pay attention to your body,
  • Keep your head elevated,
  • Use Cold Compresses (Ice Bag Treatment),
  • Get plenty of rest,
  • Maintain a healthy diet,
  • Stay cool,
  • Don't blow your nose,
  • Avoid heavy exercise,
  • Stay out of the sun,
  • No smoking,
  • Most importantly, be patient throughout this process,

For more information about the recovery process, check out our article about; "Recovery After Rhinoplasty Surgery."

Is Rhinoplasty a simple Surgery?

No, rhinoplasty is a difficult surgery. This is because of several reasons. The nose, for starters, is a complex 3D shape in the middle of the face. The alterations made during rhinoplasty are often minor. However, these modifications can have a significant impact on how the nose looks and functions.

The margin for error is small because these modifications are minor. During surgery, swelling and the injection of local anesthetic into the skin distort the nose, masking many of the subtle changes made. Rhinoplasty also lacks a standard sequence of steps. Each operation is tailored to the patient's specific needs.

Will you need to stay in the hospital after Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Almost everyone who has had rhinoplasty surgery will safely leave the hospital on the same day after surgery. Though, if you're having trouble with nausea or have other health issues that need to be monitored, you may be admitted to the hospital for one night.

Rhinoplasty in Turkey

Are you unhappy with the size or shape of your nose, or are you having breathing issues as a result of it? Do you want a more satisfying look for your nose? There's no reason to be concerned any longer! Talkurdoctor can assist you with rhinoplasty in Turkey (also known as a nose job).

Why choose Turkey for a Rhinoplasty?

As you know, thousands of people travel from the United Kingdom to different countries for health tourism purposes every year. Turkey, which is one of the countries preferred especially in recent years, is preferred because doctors and hospitals are of the highest quality.

There are several reasons behind this. First of all, most of the Turkish doctors have received multiple educations in Europe, attended conferences, became a member of associations and health institutions, received certificates, and reached the level of providing international service.

Another reason is that medical faculty education in Turkey is much more comprehensive and complex compared to many other countries. This difficulty directly increases doctor quality.

Not only these reasons but also many of the private hospitals located in Turkey, especially in Istanbul has the JCI Accreditation. Besides, in Turkish hospitals; surgery room equipment has high technology, and sick rooms provide services based on comfort and hygiene. One thing is certain that in many different countries, patient satisfaction can't be obtained due to the problems caused by the hospital after surgery.

Another reason is that the Turkish Lira is less valuable compared to the Pound due to the difference in exchange rates. That's why surgery costs in Turkey remain below the United Kingdom in terms of prices. Surgery costs are not cheap in Turkey, but Turkey seems more affordable than in the UK because of the currency difference. (21)

What is the success rate of Turkey in Rhinoplasty Surgeries?

One of the surgeries that directly alter a person's appearance is a nose job. When the surgery is unsuccessful and the patient does not receive the desired nose, the patient may be frustrated and disappointed. As a result, it is critical that the surgery is completed successfully. One of the most important criteria for the successful completion of the surgery is the doctor's knowledge, expertise, and experience.

Turkey is one of the leading countries in the world in terms of Rhinoplasty Surgery. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Turkey from all around the world to have plastic surgery, rhinoplasty in particular. Therefore, Turkish doctors have gained a lot of experience in this field and serve their patients in international standards.

Another thing that must be mentioned is that medical faculty education in Turkey is much more comprehensive and complex compared to many other countries. Thus, this difficulty directly increases doctor quality. Turkish doctors are dedicated to improving themselves and offering the most quality service and care possible.

Turkey is in the top five in aesthetics surgeries

The International Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has announced the results of research on plastic surgery around the world in recent years. According to this research, Turkey ranks in the top five in Europe among the countries where aesthetic surgeries are performed the most. In fact, these data show how successful and strong Turkey is in this field. Rhinoplasty accounts for 9.4% of these aesthetic surgeries.

What are the Rhinoplasty prices in Turkey?

First of all, it is not accurate to mention a specific price because the price range varies for each clinic, doctor, or hospital. But, the Turkish Lira is less valuable compared to the Pound due to the difference in exchange rates. That's why surgery costs in Turkey remain below the United Kingdom and other countries in terms of prices. Surgery costs are not cheap in Turkey, but Turkey seems more affordable than in the UK because of the currency difference.

There are different packages involved. Some packages in Turkey, depending on the institution or doctor, include all-in-one packages where the plane ticket, accommodation, surgery, and transportation but there are also other packages that include less or more.

The surgery alone is around the estimated price of 1800£. But like we have mentioned above, if you want to include more features in your package, such as accommodation, etc. the price range varies from 2200£ to 3200£. Be sure to do your research properly before making your choice, and remember to pick the right professional surgeon for the job.

How does the process work in Turkey to have a Rhinoplasty?

If you want to have rhinoplasty surgery in Turkey, you can contact our international patient coordinator to give you detailed information about the process. Our patient coordinator will give you detailed information about the operation details and process. You can also visit our "How it works?" page, where we describe the process in detail.

Healing is Slow - But Results Are Great

Many people experience depression after plastic surgery, particularly in the days post-surgery while their faces are bruised and swollen. This is perfectly normal and will pass quickly. Healing is slow and gradual, and the final results of surgery will take months or even years to appear. But keep in mind why you decided to have the surgery in the first place. Your surgery was a success if you were able to achieve your expectations.

After Rhinoplasty Surgery, remember to take it easy

Many patients suffer bruising and swelling for the first one to two weeks after surgery. You may not be able to see the results of the surgery right away. But don't worry: most of the bruising and swelling should go away after 10 to 14 days. Most patients are ready to return to work or school after one or two weeks. Many normal non-contact activities can be resumed after three weeks. Limit your activity as directed by your surgeon, and do not engage in any vigorous exercise until you have been cleared.

Your new nose will get better with time, be patient about the results

While you will be able to see the results of your rhinoplasty surgery after the initial bruising and swelling has subsided, it is normal to have some minor residual swelling for up to a year. Other people are generally unaware of this. The effects of rhinoplasty surgery are long-lasting. (22)
