Eyelid aesthetics or blepharoplasty is a set of surgical procedures performed by a plastic surgery specialist to remove the sagging skin and excess muscle tissue and stretch the tissues around the eye, applied to the lower and upper eyelids.
With the advancement of age, sagging naturally occurs on the skin with the effect of gravity. Parallel to this process, findings such as bagging in the eyelids, dilated skin, discoloration, loosening, and wrinkles occur. Factors such as exposure to sunlight, air pollution, irregular sleep, excessive smoking and alcohol use accelerate the aging process of the skin.
The skin normally has an elastic structure. However, as we age, the elasticity of the skin gradually decreases. As a result of the loss of elasticity in the facial skin, the excess skin first collects on the eyelids. For this reason, the first signs of aging appear in the eyelids. The aging-related changes in the eyelids cause a tired, dull and old appearance.
Some of the signs of aging seen in the lower and upper eyelids;
The skin enlargement that occurs in the eyelids causes droopy upper eyelid. This lowness can sometimes be too much to prevent vision. In this case, this condition must be treated functionally. Sometimes, droopy eyebrows and forehead accompany low eyelid. In such a case, there is an aesthetically worse appearance. In patients who want to have blepharoplasty surgery for aesthetic or functional reasons, only the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid can be applied, as well as both. Blepharoplasty is often performed in conjunction with brow lift, forehead lift, and endoscopic midface surgeries. In short, the lower and upper eyelids; Deformities such as sagging, excess skin and bagging are the main reasons for eyelid aesthetic operations.
The use of drugs such as aspirin and antibiotics should be discontinued at least 15 days before the procedure due to the risk of increasing bleeding tendency during the operation. Likewise, smoking and other tobacco use should be stopped 2-3 weeks before, as it delays wound healing. Herbal supplements should not be taken during this period, as they may cause unexpected effects.
Upper eyelid aesthetics or eyelid low eyelid surgery is the process of removing the excess skin and muscle tissue in the region. An incision is made on the eyelid fold line so that the scar is not visible. It gives better cosmetic results when applied together with forehead and eyebrow lift operations.
Fat pads positioned on the cheekbones when young are shifted downwards with the effect of gravity with the aging process. This situation causes signs of aging in the form of collapsing under the lower eyelid and deepening in the laugh lines at the rim. The aesthetic procedure for this fat pad is done endoscopically by hanging the pads in place. This application is done before any operation is performed on the lower eyelid. After hanging the fat pads in place, it may not be necessary to perform any operation on the lower eyelid. The lower eyelid is re-evaluated to see if there is bagging and sagging. If these findings are still not resolved, lower eyelid surgery is started. The surgical incision is made just below the eyelashes. The skin is lifted and the fat packs are spread to the pit of the eye, the excess skin and muscle are cut and the procedure is completed. If the collapse under the eye continues after the surgery, an under eye oil injection may be required after healing.
Eyelid aesthetics are mostly performed by individuals over the age of 35. Because the signs of aging in the eyelids often begin to appear after these ages. However, it is possible for anyone who needs it to be done at any age. The surgery cannot stop the ongoing aging of the eyelids; but it lasts for 7-8 years. After the operation, the tired facial expression of the person is replaced by a lively and calm appearance.
